You only need three things you need to perform credit repair (a.k.a. credit report disputing) by yourself: 1) Documentation that proves you are yourself, 2) a current copy of your credit report and finally 3) a template for a dispute letter. There is nothing more to it beyond that! And after you have those two things, the rest of the process can be easily handled on your own.
There is no need to give a credit repair service hundreds of dollars to do what you can do on your own. Did you know that fixing your credit on your own (self credit repair) is even the preferred method supported by the US government? Check out FTC.com if you would like to read it yourself.
And as long as you’re on that site, you might as well copy the sample of credit repair letters they have available there too. That one will work the same as any of the thousands of other similar sample letters you can find all over the internet. All you have to do is take any sample letter you like, tailor it to the items you want to dispute, include a copy of you personal identification, and mail it to the correct reporting agencies.
What sort of identification documents am I referring to? You’ll need a copy of your picture ID, a photocopy of your social security card, and a` photocopy of a utility bill or other document that shows your correct name and address. That is it! Just make sure all those documents are photocopied with absolute clarity (otherwise they’ll send it back and demand clearer ID).
Concerning the credit report, getting one should be simple. If you have recently been turned down for a loan, you should be able to receive a copy of the credit report your lender pulled for you. Short of that, you can still get one for free by dialing 1-877-322-8228, or you should be able to get one from the following address:
Annual Credit Report Request ServiceP.O. Box 105281Atlanta, GA 30348-5281
The FTC’s website also states that everyone is entitled to one free copy of their credit report each year, so if you haven’t gotten one yet, ask for one. Forget paying a credit repair agency to do what you can do on your own. The only things you should have to pay for are the printing costs associated with the letters and the stamps to mail them with.
